First Mate Helen
A Powerful Co-leader Who Understands the Feminine Side
Helen Kaye learned to sail in her early twenties while living and working in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She is a member of the Raleigh Sail and Power Squadron and has passed their Seamanship course. Over the course of their twenty-eight year marriage, Helen and Bryce have owned and sailed three boats in eastern North Carolina. Together they have cruised as far north as Baltimore and as far south as Charleston.
Helen is a cum laude graduate from Douglas College of Rutgers University. She received a Mastersof Education degree in Speech Language Pathology from Penn State. She currently owns and directs Cary Speech Services, a pediatric speech therapy practice in Cary, North Carolina.
The vessel name Dragonlady has been taken from Helen's nickname, given to her by state legislators in North Carolina. Helen used to be the principal of the multi-handicapped program for children at the Governor Moorehead School for the Blind in Raleigh. Her vigorous efforts to secure adequate funding for the children earned her the reputation as being "The Dragonlady" around the state legislature. Both Bryce and Helen take great pride in her well-earned reputation.
Helen and Bryce have two grown children, Heather and Christopher, and two grandsons named Andrew and Alec. Their children have grown up in and on the waters of the Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, and Cape Lookout National Seashore. When not sailing or working with client couples, Helen likes playing with her Yorkshire terrier, entertaining, and cooking gourmet meals for family and friends.
